Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The Perdido is located in the Perdido fold belt which is a rich discovery of crude oil and natural gas that lies in water that is nearly 8000 feet deep. The platform's peak production will be 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At 267 meters, the Perdido is nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower. An oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, and to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. In many cases, the platform contains facilities to house the workforce as well.
Port Fourchon, Louisiana is a mega oil port, located at Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, on the Gulf of Mexico. It is a sea port, with significant petroleum industry traffic from offshore Gulf oil platforms and drilling rigs as well as the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port pipeline. Fourchon services deepwater oil and gas exploration, drilling, and production in the Gulf of Mexico. Port Fourchon services over 90% of the Gulf of Mexico's oil production. There are over 600 oil platforms within a 40-mile radius of Port Fourchon. This area furnishes 16 to 18 percent of the US oil supply. This port is amazing by any standards. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) began on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. It claimed eleven lives and is considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, an estimated 8% to 31% larger in volume than the previously largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill. Following the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a sea-floor oil gusher flowed for 87 days, until it was capped on 15 July 2010. The US Government estimated the total discharge at 4.9 million barrels (210 million US gal; 780,000 m3). After several failed efforts to contain the flow, the well was declared sealed on 19 September 201...
Fish farming revolution In conjunction with Nordlaks, NSK Ship Design has designed an aquaculture ship that could be the beginning of a sustainable revolution in the fish farming industry. There is an air of excitement at NSK Ship Design, because they have been quietly working away since June 2015 on a special project for Nordlaks – a project that can be classified as no less than sensational for the fish farming industry. The world’s largest ship On the drawing board is a ship known as Havfarm (“Ocean Farm”), 430 metres in length and 54 metres wide, it will lay at anchor, fixed to the seafloor using the offshore industry’s technological solutions. Norway is a world leader in this field, and the Norwegian industry is comfortable creating solutions that can withstand very tough condition...
The first offshore wind farm in the United States started producing clean energy in mid-December. Located 13 miles from the coast of Rhode Island, the five turbines will power 17,000 homes, including all the energy necessary to sustain the nearby Block Island. The wind energy industry is the fastest-growing job sector in the country. Despite their popularity in Europe, however, coastal turbines have faced resistance in the U.S. “We have a huge, clean energy resource off of our coast, and to date we have not tapped into it,” Deepwater Wind CEO Jeff Grybowski told VICE News correspondent Arielle Duhaime-Ross. Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has expanded its security commitments and tried to bring as many states as possible into a U.S.-led liberal world order. That strategy—sometimes dubbed “liberal hegemony”—has repeatedly failed. The United States should return to its earlier strategy of “offshore balancing” and focus on three key regions: Europe, Northeast Asia, and the Persian Gulf. If a potential hegemon emerges, Washington should commit resources to preserve a favorable balance of power and if necessary fight to uphold it. If no potential hegemon is present, however, the United States should remain offshore and let local powers handle regional security problems themselves. This approach would reduce U.S. defense burdens, mitigate the terrorism problem, and discourage WMD p...
Some of the richest energy reserves in the world are just off our US shores waiting to be discovered in a government owned area lying just 3 - 200 miles out to sea. An advanced exploration technique called seismic surveying is the first step to unlock this precious resource needed to ensure America's energy security.
The National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) is marking its 40th Anniversary. Over the past four decades, NOIA has effectively represented the interests of all facets of the offshore energy industry, which is vital to the economic prosperity and energy security of the nation.NOIA will be commemorating the anniversary throughout the year as the association and its members work to increase access to the Outer Continental Shelf.
In the U.S. today, wind power accounts for about five percent of all electricity generation, but a new project aims to change that. A $300 million installation off the coast of Block Island, Rhode Island, takes the renewable energy technology out to sea. Gov. Gina Raimondo anticipates the project is the beginning of a new industry, but some locals are skeptical. Mike Taibbi reports.
